Optical Bonding Technology

Optical bonding, is a process used to create a direct bond between displays and bezels.
This technology is used to improve the display performance, especially in outdoor environments or under high light conditions.
In optical bonding, a transparent, epoxy- or silicone-based adhesive is used between the display and the bezel. This transparent material fills the gap between the two surfaces and eliminates the ingress of air or other materials.

As a result, the image displayed on the display is sharper, the contrast is higher, and the reflection is reduced.

Optical Bonding offers several benefits:

- Improves display readability in bright sunlight or high light conditions.

- Reduces glare and reflection, resulting in a clearer image.

- Increases the impact resistance and durability of the industrial monitor, as the adhesive layer provides protection against external influences.

- Optical bonding improves the water and dust resistance of displays, as the adhesive layer completely seals the display.

However, optical bonding also has some potential disadvantages:

- The process can be more complicated and costly than other methods, such as lamination.

- If the display fails or is damaged, repair or replacement may be more difficult due to the transparent adhesive layer.

- In the case of a touchscreen monitor, it may be possible to replace both the touch panel and the LCD panel.

In addition to industrial monitors and open frame monitors, optical bonding is often used in commercial displays, smartphones, tablets, and car navigation systems.

The process improves the performance and experience of the display, especially in extreme lighting conditions or extreme conditions.

There are two main types of optical bonding:

Dry bonding: This method uses an optical clear adhesive (OCA) to bond the layers together. The process is fast, clean, mechanically stable and easy to automate, making it ideal for smaller displays and high-volume production. It does not require liquid materials or UV curing, so there is no risk of adhesive seepage.

Wet bonding: This method uses a liquid optical clear resin (OCR) or adhesive that is cured using UV light. This method is mainly used for larger displays or applications requiring higher optical clarity. The disadvantages of the process can be the formation of bubbles or impurities, and the discoloration of the adhesive over time, which can cause permanent damage.

Optical bonding can be a manual or automated process, and is usually performed in a bubble-free environment, such as a clean room, to avoid contamination. There is no air between the bonded layers, which reduces light reflection, improves image quality, and increases the durability of the display, making it more resistant to moisture, dust, or shock.

This technology is particularly useful in industrial, medical, outdoor, and industrial touchscreen devices, where the readability and durability of the displays are critical.
The OCR (Optical Clear Resin) or wet optical bonding process consists of the following steps:

Preparation: The display panel and the cover glass or touch panel are thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, dirt and grease, as these can lead to bubbles and defects during bonding.

Application of optical resin: An optically clear liquid resin (OCR) is evenly applied to the display surface or the inside of the cover glass. This liquid layer fills in microscopic gaps and irregularities, eliminating air pockets between the two surfaces.

Bonding of layers: The cover glass or touch panel is precisely placed on the display, with the OCR material acting as an intermediate layer. It is then carefully bonded together to ensure that the adhesive does not leave bubbles.

Curing of the adhesive: The liquid adhesive is cured by UV light or heat, forming a solid and transparent layer. This process ensures a durable, bubble-free and strong bond between the layers.

Quality Control: After bonding, the display is inspected for bubbles, impurities or other defects, ensuring high optical quality and durability.

Cleaning and Finishing: After curing, it may be necessary to remove residual adhesive and clean the finished display to ensure flawless display.

This wet bonding technology is particularly beneficial for larger, complex or curved displays, as the liquid optical adhesive better fills the spaces between gaps and cracks, ensuring optimal light transmission and protecting the display from moisture and dust.
